Reptile Socialization: What Pet Owners Need to Know

Reptiles (also called herps) are generally considered wild creatures and should not be handled frequently. In fact, many species of reptiles are better off without being handled at all. Reptiles possess strong protective instincts and tend to be wary and nervous in a strange environment. Some reptiles, such as snakes, are primarily predators, and may strike at anything that moves, even people and other pets.

Reptiles are also unable to handle stress well.  Thus, if you have a pet snake, family members and even guests should be briefed not to tap on the animal’s enclosure. Moving your pet’s enclosure frequently and interacting with a herp is not recommended. Also, there should always be close adult supervision whenever a child handles a herp.

However, this information does not imply herps won’t make as ideal pets. They definitely can! However, you should always keep in mind that they are not dogs and cats which have been totally domesticated for a long time.
