A pet rat’s cage will benefit from daily cleaning. Soiled bedding, uneaten food, and droppings should be removed and properly disposed of. Scrubbing the cage using warm soapy water can be done at least weekly. This is also a good time to change bedding, removing soiled ones and placing in new bedding. Since their front teeth won’t stop growing, like most rodents, they need something to gnaw on. Placing in pieces of untreated or unpainted wood blocks or chew toys can help keep your pet’s teeth in good condition. Pet rats need time to get used to the presence of people and being handled. They are curious creatures and you can take advantage of this trait by offering small tasty rodent treats. Once they are used to handling, your pet rat can actually be a sociable and fun companion. Always use one hand to support the bottom part of its body and the other hand on its back.
