How To Prepare A Bland Diet For Your Dog

A bland diet is usually indicated for dog patients suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. However, pet owners should remember that this is not a cure for any underlying cause. A visit to the vet clinic should be made when vomiting and diarrhea persist, especially when it’s accompanied by other symptoms.

A bland diet is basically made up of boiled lean meat mixed with boiled white rice (at a 50:50 ratio). Avoid using any additives such as salt, garlic, butter, or seasoning. A bland diet is usually given when a dog has not been showing any signs of digestive upset for 2-3 hours, and only after it has consumed some water without vomiting or diarrhea.

Introduce the bland diet gradually by giving only very small amounts (about 1 tablespoon). If there is no vomiting within the next 2 hours, you can offer a little bit more of the bland diet. You can gradually increase the quantity and frequency. You may continue to feed this to your dog for 1-2 days before you begin gradually mixing in your pet’s normal food. For the next couple of days, gradually decrease the bland diet and increase your pet’s regular food until his meal is composed entirely of his normal food.

Diarrhea can possibly lead to serious complications without proper veterinary attention. Call your Frisco, TX veterinarian if your pet is suffering from persistent diarrhea.
