Symptomatic Epilepsy in Keeshonds

If your Keeshond has been diagnosed with epilepsy ask your veterinarian, Pinecrest, FL if it is idiopathic or symptomatic. Veterinarians and scientists alike have often categorized epilepsy into two categories, which are idiopathic epilepsy and symptomatic epilepsy. Idiopathic epilepsy simply means your dog’s seizures and epileptic activity has no underlying cause and is most likely an inherited illness. Symptomatic epilepsy; however, is when the epileptic or seizure activity can be traced to an underlying cause or illness. This type is also known as secondary epilepsy. Keeshonds may be prone to two forms of epileptic seizures which are “Petit mal” or partial motor seizures and “Grand mal” or major motor seizures. The Petit mal seizures are not as severe as the Grand mal seizures. If your Keeshond has a Grand mal seizure than he may seize severely and even lose consciousness. The Grand mal seizures are much more severe and include involuntary body movements. For more details, click here.
