10:57 PM Walking Your Dogs |
An important pre-requisite before taking your dog on a pack walk, is to make sure that your dogs are well-trained and disciplined. They should recognize you as the alpha leader and thus always look up to you for guidance and discipline.
While walking your dogs, they should always be aware that you are the leader by letting them heel beside or behind you. This action will reinforce the notion that you are the one in charge, and that you will be the one to lead the way.
Dogs love to explore and investigate anything along the side of the road. However, during pack walks, they can only stop to sniff or eliminate when you give the permission. Male dogs can be allowed to spray only one tree or one area.
Instead of allowing their normal roaming behavior to set the pace, let the dogs focus on following you. Always assert your dominance to prevent your pets from ever thinking of challenging your leadership by leading you instead of you leading them.
If you have the luxury of time, pack walks can be done on a regular basis. These outdoor excursions are great bonding sessions for the whole pack as well as an excellent avenue for physical and mental motivation.
