Keeping The Bird Cage Clean

A clean and well-maintained enclosure is important to the health and well- being of pet birds. The cage needs to be thoroughly cleaned at least 2-3 times weekly to maintain a healthy environment. Here are some tips to remember when cleaning the bird cage:

  • Food and water containers should be cleaned daily before placing in new food and fresh clean water. Any leftover food should be removed because they can turn stale or moldy. You should have an idea how much food to give to your bird so there will be no leftovers; it is also one way to prevent wastage. Spoiled food can also become potential medium for growth and multiplication of bacteria.
  • When cleaning the cage, be sure to wipe down the enclosure, bird bath, and toys.
  • Don’t use bleach to disinfect the enclosure and the cage furniture. Weekly disinfection can be done using boiling water.
  • Any sandpaper at the bottom of the cage should be replaced regularly

Any change in your pet’s health and/or behavior should be brought to the attention of your Glendale, AZ veterinarian. Set an appointment at this link: https://bellanimalhospital.com/
