How to Prevent Aggression among Pet Rats

First, if you have added an unfamiliar rat to a mix of adult rats that have already coexisted for some time as a group, remove the unfamiliar rat as soon as possible in order to lower stress levels in the environment.

Secondly, avoid putting anything in the cage that emits a foreign scent as this will lead to relentless investigation by your pet rats or make them unnecessarily aggressive.

Third, make sure that each rat has access to its own food bowl, water bottle, and hiding place in the event that it wants to use any of these and doesn’t feel like sharing it with another rat.

Using visual barriers is a great way to keep the rats from focusing on one another in their cage. Setting up several shelters is also a good idea.
