Guidelines for Cleaning Your Pet Rat’s Cage
First, keep in mind that it is extremely important to clean your pet rat’s cage on a regular basis as allowing urine and faeces to accumulate can lead to the development of a slew of health issues in your rat.
Once each week is sufficient for cleaning time. It is ideal to conduct cleanup in the evening when your rats are awake and active so you do not disturb them. Avoid cleaning the cage while your rats are asleep as waking them up can lead to elevated stress levels.
After you are finished cleaning out the cage, be sure to leave some of its old but unsoiled nesting material so that it does not become shocked by the unfamiliar smell of the newly cleaned cage.
