When Your Dog is Identifying, it May not Always Sniff in Appropriate Places

Part of the reason dogs sniff so much is because they are identifying smells to objects or to people.

Dogs have very sharp memories, but it is largely due to their sense of smell and the ability to recall a smell and what it is associated to.

Some things that dogs sniff at makes us cringe, like old dirty sneaker, dirty underwear, and sometimes the embarrassment of sniffing in a man or woman’s personal area.

Dogs recall people’s scents and may not come in contact with a certain person for months, but when the dog is around that person again, the person’s scent is familiar, so the dog knows right away this is not a stranger.

Dogs can also detect odors that we cannot and they are again able to hold the memory of that particular smell.
