Treatment Regimen Of Arthritis In Cats And Dogs

Arthritis in cats and dogs can adversely affect their health and quality of life. Upon examination, your Washington DC veterinarian may recommend some diagnostic tests and procedures that may include the following:

  • Radiographic examination – x-rays of the affected areas can provide a clear picture of the degenerative process within the affected joints.
  • Joint Fluid Aspiration – this test will help determine whether the arthritis is inflammatory or degenerative arthritis.
  • Biochemical Profile or Chemistry Panel and Complete Blood Count (CBC) – These are blood tests which are very important in evaluating the functions of important organs of the body including the heart, kidneys, liver, and pancreas. The CBC can also give you a complete picture of whether or not the different blood cells are present in normal quantities in the body.

Treatment and Management Regimen

The treatment regimen for arthritis in dogs and cat will greatly depend on the severity of the condition at the time of diagnosis. The regimen usually involves the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDs
  • Antibiotics
  • Steroids
  • Analgesics or painkillers
  • Dietary management
  • Exercise management
  • Surgery
  • Dietary supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin
  • Adequate rest
  • Regular massage to encourage more blood circulation in the muscles and joint tissues
  • Warm and comfortable beddings

Considering that some medications for arthritis can have negative effects if the proper dosage is not followed, you should consult your Washington DC vet before giving any medication to your arthritic pet.
