Stereotyping Cats Based On The Color Of Their Hair Coat

Did you know that a study was actually conducted by the University of California, Berkeley regarding the typecasting of cats based on the hair coat color? The results of the study revealed the sad fact that it does exist. People actually pre-judge felines by their hair coat color.

But is there really truth to the common belief that the color of a cat’s hair coat can predict his personality and behavior?

Some of the common feline stereotypes include black cats as bringing bad luck, calico cats being crazy, tuxedo cats being very affectionate, ginger cats as very super-friendly, and white cats as shy or aloof.

“Black cat syndrome”

Black cats in animal shelters are often passed over by potential pet owners for their more colorful counterparts. Indeed, feline stereotyping can have a negative impact on the rate of adoption of some colors of cats.

But there has been little evidence that these stereotyped personalities between differently-colored cats actually exists. These notions surely have serious repercussions for cats whose hair coat colors have negative connotations.

You can always talk to your Wake Forest, NC vet about any issues and/or concerns that concern your pet’s health and wellbeing.
