Snakes Species for Amateur Pet Owners

Many species of snakes are known to make ideal pets for first-time reptile owners. Starter species are generally easy to care for and are fairly easy to tame. Their nutritional needs are also easy to meet; although they don’t need to eat often, you must be prepared to feed your pet snake with whole prey such as mice and rats.

Some popular starter snakes include Corn Snakes, King and Milk Snakes, and Ball Pythons. It is recommended to buy only from captive bred snakes to minimize potential feeding problems.

Most species of venomous snakes and large constrictors won’t make suitable pets for newbie reptile owners. Some snake species which are not recommended for beginners include boa constrictors, Burmese pythons, other constrictors and venomous snakes. Although Red Tailed Boas are generally docile, they can grow quite large and strong. Burmese pythons are generally docile but mishandling of these snakes can be dangerous and may have serious consequences.
