Signs your Russian Tortoise may have Mouth Rot

Mouth Rot or Infectious Stomatitis is a common illness in reptiles. Snakes, turtles, and lizards have all been known to develop mouth rot in and out of captivity. Turtles like the Russian Tortoise can also develop mouth rot. The primary cause is stress from poorly regulated habitat temperatures, overcrowded enclosures, parasites, trauma, and even malnutrition. If your still is stressed, his immune system can be compromised and the bacteria normally maintained in the oral cavity can develop into an infection. Signs of mouth rot include inflammation or hemorrhages in the mouth, on the lips and gums as well as a mucus or pus buildup in the oral cavity. Your turtle may also walk around with his mouth open as if he’s trying to breathe. Swelling may also be evident. Please call your Bowmanville, ON vet as soon as you see any of these symptoms as treatment is needed right away. Or make an appointment here.
