Keeping Your Pet Bird’s Cage Tidy

A dirty birdcage will smell and present an unsightly mess while putting your bird’s health at risk. Throw away old food and rinse out the water bowl daily. Clean any droppings that you can remove from the cage promptly. You will need to do a thorough cleaning once a week. Remove your bird from its cage and ask someone to supervise it while you are cleaning the cage. Remove all toys, climbing apparatus and bowls and clean well using soap and water. Remove and clean perches or scrape wooden perches with a wire perch cleaner. Change the cage liner and disinfect the cage with a bird-safe spray cleaner. This will reduce the likelihood of a mite infestation or exposure to bacteria or fungus. Let all cage accessories air dry and put everything back into the cage. Return your bird to its sparkling clean cage. Contact your Niwot, CO vet to learn more.
