8:04 AMIs Your Pet Making You Ill?
It is a fact that there are certain medical conditions that can be passed from pets to humans; these are called zoonotic diseases. The mode of transmission generally depends on the type of the problem.
Gastrointestinal parasites can be acquired by touching fecal material of infected pets without proper washing of the hands afterward. They can also be acquired from eating or drinking fecal-contaminated food and water. Hookworms have the ability to penetrate the skin of humans. Toxoplasmosis can cause problems in pregnant women; transmission of the parasite is through handling of fecal material or raw meat of an infected animal without washing their hands properly afterward.
Ringworm and other fungal infections can be transmitted via direct contact with the skin and hair of infected pets.
There is also a type of mite, Sarcoptes scabei, that can also infest on cats, dogs, and humans.
Ticks are important carriers of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases that affect humans.
