"I think my pet bird is ill" - Recognizing Warning Signs of Illness

It is very important for pet owners to be quick to recognize signs of illness in their pets. Nipping the problem in the bud will help ensure your pet bird’s health and wellbeing.

Here are some ways to monitor your pet’s condition:

  • Check your pet’s weight by asking your vet about its ideal weight. The weight is an ideal parameter for monitoring pets. Weigh your pet regularly; know that even a few grams can spell a difference in your pet’s health.
  • Your pet’s breastbone (keel) is an important indicator of your pet’s weight. An underweight bird has a keel that is too prominent, while it is hard to feel the keel when your bird is overweight.
  • While your pet is on its perch, observe carefully for any defects in its legs or its stance.
  • An overweight bird may have fatty deposits under the skin resulting in an uneven appearance of its feathers.

Asking assistance from your Cameron Park vet will also go a long way in addressing any health problem of your pet bird. Click on this link to know more about your pet's needs and set an appointment.
