Hypoglycemia in Samoyeds

Hypoglycemia occurs when a dog’s blood sugar level or glucose level is abnormally low. Your vet Thousand Oaks, CA can tell you that hypoglycemia can affect just about any breed of dog including the Samoyed. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include a sudden decrease in energy, change in appetite, weakness, restlessness, confusion and even fainting. Hypoglycemia is often the result of an overdose of insulin in diabetic dogs. Experts have found that hypoglycemia can also be the result of an underlying health problem. For instance, a dog’s brain needs a constant supply of glucose in order to function. An underlying illness could be preventing this from happening, which in turn triggers hypoglycemia to occur. If your Samoyed is diabetic, you especially want to watch for signs and symptoms, but non-diabetic dogs should be monitored as well. Talk to your vet for further information and signs of what to watch out for in your pup.
