Fitness Tips For Sedentary Pets

If your pet has led a sedentary life for most of his life, it is a good idea to take him to your veterinarian before starting him on a new fitness regimen. A thorough checkup will help determine if your pet is fit enough to engage in various physical activities without any risk of injury and/or health problems. Your vet will advise you regarding what type of physical activities are appropriate for your pet. Make sure to go slow to give your pet’s body enough time to adjust to the new routine. Start with short walks, gradually increasing the distance and the speed as your pet gets used to the activity.

Fitness tips for sedentary pets

  • Young dogs should never be subjected to long jogs or runs or any type of strenuous physical activity, for these can exert pressure on their still-growing bones and muscles.
  • Choose routes that are pet-friendly. Avoid paths where your pooch may step on sharp surfaces or sweltering pavements. A dog’s paws may be tough-looking but they can actually be easily damaged.
  • After any outdoor activity, make sure to check your pet’s paws for blisters, thorns, dirt, grass, etc.

Talk to your Pikeville, KY veterinarian about your pet’s exercise needs.
