Conjunctivitis in British Longhair Cats

Did you know that cats like the British Longhair can get conjunctivitis or pink eye? This illness is commonly seen in people and includes irritated eyes and often a gummy substance that prevents the eye from opening or from closing. It is very contagious. It is also very common in pets including cats and dogs. For cats like the British Longhair, pink eye often occurs as a result of the FHV-1 virus or chlamydophila. If your cat’s eyes appear to be red or irritated for long periods of time, call your vet. Additional symptoms may include discharge in the eye, pawing or scratching of the eyes, and possibly puffyness or swelling. Although it is not a painful condition, it is extremely itchy and can leave the eye irritated and red. If left untreated, the condition can grow worse creating severe and lasting harm to the eye. Seek immediate treatment for your cat by calling your veterinarian Marion, IA.
