Common Garden Hazards for Cats

Your garden and backyard may be a rich source of toxic substances that can be harmful to your cat. When ingested, these substances may cause serious health problems that can be life threatening.

Fertilizers

When you apply fertilizers, be aware that there are types of fertilizers which can be harmful when ingested. Iron is a common additive to fertilizer to boost its effects however cats that consume considerable amounts of iron can suffer from digestive problems and potential heart and liver problems.

Compost piles

If you have compost piles or bins, it is best to fence them off to prevent your cat from having access to the decomposing and decaying organic matter.

Rodenticides

Rat and mouse poisons should be kept securely in cabinets which are not accessible to your cat. Rodenticides contain lethal ingredients that can cause internal bleeding and kidney failure.

Pesticides and insecticides

These products are commonly applied on plants to get rid of or prevent insects from destroying the foliage. One common active ingredient of insecticides is organophosphate which is quite lethal to cats.
