Common Causes Of Blindness In Dogs

There is a long list of reasons why dogs lose their sense of sight, partially or completely. For some dogs, a hereditary disease or congenital disorder may result in them being born blind. But there are also instances when a dog becomes blind later in life as a result of injury or illness. Blindness can affect dogs of any breed, sex, or age. Vision problems may also be an age-related health issue that many senior pets may have to contend with. Here are other conditions that are known to cause blindness in dogs:

  • Cataracts - certain breeds are more prone to developing cataracts, which is characterized by cloudiness of the lens of the eyes.
  • Glaucoma - there is buildup of pressure inside one or both eyes causing pain and pressure.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) - this is a congenital problem that causes gradual vision loss.
  • Retinal detachment - there are many causes of retinal detachment, such as tumor, trauma, elevated blood pressure and inflammation among others.
  • Corneal ulcers - if left without proper treatment and attention, there will be damage to the cornea thereby causing vision loss.
