Cats Are Highly Vulnerable And Ultra-Sensitive to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) refers to second-hand and third-hand smoke. Cats are exposed to second-hand smoke when a smoker releases cigarette smoke into the air; third-hand smoke exposure involves being subjected to smoke residue that has settled on furniture, carpets, cars, and even on human skin.

The grooming habits of cats have been shown to significantly increase their risks of exposing their oral tissues to high amounts of carcinogenic substances every single day. They are extremely sensitive to ETS, that even exposure to small amounts can have a profound effect on their health and wellbeing. A study has shown that some forms of cancer in cats are associated with exposure to second-hand smoke. Cats that are living with pet owners who smoke have twice the risks of developing malignant lymphoma, which is the most common type of cancer found in cats. Also, these cats have been found to have significant amounts of nicotine and other toxic substances in their urine. Ask your Olathe, KS vet Oakbrook Animal Hospital regarding important pet issues.
