Most cat food manufacturers offer a series of foods that support your cat’s dietary needs throughout the varying stages of her life. Kitten food offers extra protein to support her developing brain and growing muscles and bones. However, when your cat reaches her first birthday, this kitten food provides too many calories and can contribute to obesity. Thus you need to switch to an adult formula food. You can continue with this food for most of your cat’s life but consider switching to an adult or mature formula food once she starts showing signs of aging. There are also specialized foods that help manage specific health issues such as weight control, urinary tract support or hairball control. Some of these foods are only available by prescription. Gradually switch foods over about a week to reduce digestive issues. For more informati ... Read more »

When summer months approach the temperatures soar and heat waves are common. It’s important especially during these times to keep yourself and your pets hydrated with plenty of water to prevent heatstroke and other heat related illnesses. This includes keeping your pet snake cool. One of the first ways to keep your snake cool is make sure he has a large enough bowl of water to soak in. Snakes don’t really drink, but instead soak in water through their skin. They need fresh water in a large bowl in order to soak. If your snake requires warm temperatures in his habitat, monitor how warm it gets. During the hot summer, you may find that your snake doesn’t need heating lamps or other heat sources in his cage. In fact, you may need to provide more ventilation in the cage to keep humi ... Read more »

Birds like to be the center of attention. If you have a bird at home, make sure you provide him with plenty of toys and opportunities to keep himself busy. For instance, toys for the cage may include the hanging wooden toys that have bells on them and string hanging from them. Birds love chewing on wood and string. They also enjoy hearing the bell ring. If your bird is especially vocal he may imitate the sound of the bell too. Providing different perches in the cage is also a good way to keep your bird entertained. Mirrors in front of the food and water bowls work too. Toys for outside of the cage may include a little ball to roll or push around. Creative toys that you can store treats are also great toys. These motivate your bird to solve a puzzle in order to get a treat. For more ideas, click here, or contact your Farmers Branch, veterinary clinic.

If you’re planning a road trip and your rabbit is going along with you, make sure you plan ahead and schedule in extra stop and rest times for your rabbit. Your rabbit will need a break from the moving vehicle. He might even need to get out of his cage and stretch his legs. If this happens, make sure you put a harness and leash on your rabbit. Whether your rabbit is well trained or not he needs to be secured and unable to escape from you. He may panic and try to run because the area is unfamiliar. Keep him on his leash and walk him around just a bit. Take these rest stops as an opportunity to feed your rabbit his meals or snacks. Check his water bottle to make sure he’s drinking as well. For more suggestions, consult with your Glen Ellyn, IL vet.

Planning to take your little ferret on a road trip? That’s awesome! Your ferret will love being with you and you will enjoy his company as well. When taking a road trip with your ferret, make sure you plan ahead and pack food bowls, water bowls, food, bottled water, treats and snacks. Don’t forget your ferret’s leash and harness and possibly a spare set just in case. When traveling for long hours, plan to stop frequently. You and your ferret both need to take a break from the car and stretch your legs. This is a great time to walk your ferret on his leash and harness. Just make sure you walk your ferret near your car or in an area away from other animals as your ferret may become agitated, distressed or even angry and try to lash out at the other animals. For more tips, talk with your Glen Ellyn, IL veterinary clinic.

If you’re looking foår dog diapers for your elderly male dog or your male dog that has issues controlling when he goes to the bathroom, make sure you look for diapers designed for males. If you find the regular diapers that look like child diapers and have a hole in the back for a tail, then you’re looking at female diapers. These are not going to work for your male as they won’t come up high enough over the tail and backend to cover the male’s private areas. Instead, you should look for a belly band. These are for male dogs. They wrap around the belly and cover the penis perfectly. There is no leakage. You can use disposable or washable diapers. If you use washable, make sure you use a scent free detergent. Also make sure you measure your dog to find out what size to buy. Contact your veterinarian Farmers Branch, TX for more information.

Going on long road trips can be tough on you and your dog. Here are a few tips to help make the trip a little less tiring and boring for you and your canine companions. First, plan to take frequent stops. You may be used to driving straight through to your destination, but your pup is going to need to take frequent stops for potty breaks and to stretch his legs. A general estimation for stopping is about every two hours or when your dog starts barking excessively as this may be an indication that he has to potty. Pack treats and meals for your pup so that you can get to them easily when stopping for a break. When looking for places to stop and rest, choose rest areas that have a designated dog walking area. Did you know that cats can get diabetes just like dogs and even people? If your cat eats a high sugary diet then he may be prone to developing diabetes. In animals, the disease can often occur because the cat doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas and is in charge of regulating the flow of glucose in the bloodstream. A lack of insulin can cause the cat’s body to start breaking down fat and protein preserves in order to provide itself with energy. Energy should, however, come from fats, carbohydrates and proteins consumed in the daily diet not stored proteins and fats. Because of this imbalance, your cat may start to lose weight and develop high blood sugar. You will need to take your cat to the vet for blood work and an exam. Speak with your vet North Dallas, TX to learn more.

Your cat’s whiskers are thick, specialized hairs that are attached to highly sensitive nerves. These whiskers give your cat enhanced sensory abilities. The whiskers grow to roughly the same width as your cat’s body. Thus she can use her whiskers to determine whether she can fit into small spaces. If your cat’s head and whiskers fit through the opening so will the rest of her body. Your cat’s whiskers help her calculate distance and height making her able to leap from surface to surface with accuracy. The whiskers pick up vibrations so your cat knows the exact location of prey whether it’s a mouse or your foot, even in the dark. Never trim your cat’s whiskers since this will cause confusion and disorientation. Old worn whiskers will fall out on their own to be replaced with new ones as needed. Contact your Portage, MI vet to learn more.
