Your cat scratches to remove old, worn layers of her nails to reveal fresh, new ones. She also scratches to mark her territory using scent from glands in her feet. You may never completely eliminate your cat’s inappropriate scratching but you can curb her scratching of inappropriate things such as your drapes, sofa or rugs. Trim your cat’s nails often to lessen the damage she can do when she scratches. Give your cat scratching posts and place them close to your targeted belongings. Encourage her to use the scratching posts and praise her if she uses them on her own. Cover your targeted belongings with aluminum foil or double-sided tape when not in use. These materials feel weird to your cat’s feet and will deter her from inappropriate scratching. Never yell at or punish your cat while she is learning. You can get your dog under control quickly if he will sit on command. And many more advanced obedience training starts from a sitting position. Train your dog while he is alert but not overly excited. Get down to your dog’s level and hold a food treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Raise the treat up and over your dog’s head so that he needs to lower his rear end to continue following it. Say your dog’s name followed by the SIT command. As soon as your dog’s rear end touches the floor, give him the treat and lots of praise. Practice this often and gradually increase the time between the touchdown and giving your dog the treat. Reduce and eventually eliminate the treats so your dog will sit on your command and praise alone. Never punish or yell at your dog while he is learning.
