Your dog definitely appreciates the taste of wet dog food, but not if it isn’t stored properly! Here are some tips for storing wet dog food.

While the food is still in the can, it can be stored nearly anywhere. Many pet parents keep the dog food in the pantry, while others store it in the garage. The cans are easy to stack, so you can buy in bulk. Just make sure that you use the food before its expiration date!

If you don’t feed your dog all the food from the can at once, it will have to be stored until next time. Make sure you cover the can and place it in the refrigerator. You can buy special can covers or you can simply place the can inside a Ziploc bag.

To learn more about storing different kinds of dog food, plan a visit with your veterinary clinic Marietta, GA.

When it comes to walking a dog, most people don’t think any further than a regular old collar, but there are many other choices! If you decide to go with a harness instead, should you choose one that clips in the front or the back?

Harnesses are usually chosen because they can keep a dog from pulling during a walk. If you’re looking for a quick fix and you don’t mind that your dog has to wear a harness every time you head outside, consider a harness with a back clip. It will drastically cut back on pulling behavior.

If you’d like your dog to eventually walk without pulling while wearing a regular collar, use a front clip harness. It prevents pulling too, but it’s designed for training, not comfort.

For help training your dog to walk properly, call your veterinarian Milwaukie ... Read more »

The changing of the seasons can have a profound effect on us. It can even result in seasonal affective disorder in some. Do the seasons affect our feline friends as well?

The seasons can definitely affect our pets. Perhaps the most noticeable change occurs in your pet’s coat. As the weather warms up, your cat will start shedding more in an effort to thin his fur. In the fall, your cat’s coat will become thicker to keep him warm during the coldest months of the year.

The seasons can affect your cat’s mood as well. Felines love to gaze out open windows. In the winter when it gets dark early and the windows are closed more often, your pet can get restless, bored, and cranky.

Want to keep your cat happy all year long?  Schedule a visit with your Friendly Animal Clinic. ... Read more »

It’s obvious why people own chickens. They can provide your family with eggs, but why can’t you just keep the chickens in the backyard? Why do they need a special coop?

Well, first, the coop provides them with protection from the weather. Wind and rain can be hard on an exposed chicken. A coop gives them a place to escape.

Chicken coops can also protect your chickens from predators. This is especially true if you live in a rural area. Even a neighbor’s dog can pose a huge problem to free ranging chickens that are allowed to roam the yard.

Finding eggs is a lot easier in a chicken coop than it is in a large grassy area! Want to learn more about how to successfully keep chickens? Your veterinary clinic Neshoba County MS can provide you with more information.

Dogs love going outside. Cats love going outside too, but that doesn’t mean they should be allowed out. What about hamsters? Can they go outside?

You can definitely take your hamster outside, but he requires constant supervision. The easiest way to let your pet play outside is to build a pen that allows him to romp in the grass. Make sure he can’t chew through it, squeeze through the bars, or climb up and over the edge.

Harnesses are made for some small pocket pets that allow you to walk your animal in the grass, but they are not a good idea for hamsters. Hamsters are so small they can easily wiggle out of the harness.

Make sure you keep an eye open for mites and fleas! For more tips on spending time with your hamster outside, plan a visit with your veterinary clinic 4S Ranch, CA.

One of the sure signs your Bichon Frise is having trouble with his ears is if you notice him shaking his head constantly. You may even see him biting or rubbing at his ears as well. If you’ve checked your pup’s ears and cannot find the source for irritation or you notice the ears are red on the inside or even the outside, call your vet and set up an exam. Small signs of an ear infection may include head shaking, ear scratching or even pulling away when the ear is touched. Your dog may also have trouble opening his mouth or having his head touched because of the severity of pain. If the ear infection reaches the inner ear, your dog may become dizzy, lose his balance, walk in continued circles or even start vomiting due to dizziness and pain. Dealing with allergies isn’t ever any fun, especially when it’s almost impossible to avoid what you’re allergic to. Here are a few tips for dealing with a friend’s cat when you have allergies.

Try and avoid visiting your friend at her house if you can. Make plans to visit somewhere else or invite her over to your house. If this isn’t a possibility, make sure she knows about your allergy. She may be willing to shut the cat in a back room and vacuum before you come over.

If you do visit her house, avoid coming in contact with the cat. Because cat hair can end up just about anywhere in the home, make sure you wash your hands frequently and avoid rubbing your face until your hand’s are washed.

Don’t forget to carry allergy meds! For more tips, call your pet clinic ... Read more »

Guinea pigs are relatively healthy pets and can be expected to live six to eight years. Some pigs have even live to be 14 years old. Feed your pig a high-quality, nutritionally complete diet consisting of guinea pig pellets, fresh vegetables and fruits plus a generous supply of timothy hay. Your pocket pet’s enclosure is where she will spend a great deal of her time. This makes it very important to place her enclosure in an area where she will be able to live both a happy and healthy life. This means that she will be away from cold drafts that could make her uncomfortable or even sick, and that her cage won’t get knocked over by anyone passing by. It also means that she will be close enough to all the action in your household that she will be able to see what’s happening and get frequent attention from the rest of the family, but not so close that it will hinder her when she needs to relax for a while. Find a spot that can be just for her, and maintain it to a high standard to keep her comfortable. For more information, please contact your local veterinarian Lexington, KY.

If you own a dog like the American Eskimo and are concerned about seizure activity, please call your vet right away. In general, a canine epileptic seizure can be split into four different phases. The first phase is the Prodrome phase in which your dog’s behavior will change. The second is the Aura phase in which the owner may notice their dog’s excessive pacing, vomiting, and whining. The third phase is the Ictus and involves the full seizure in which the dog may lose control, lose consciousness, and begin thrashing about. The fourth stage is called the Post-Ictal Stage. This stage marks the end of the seizure and lasts around 10 to 30 minutes. In this time your dog may sleep for several hours. If your American Eskimo goes through any of these stages, please be sure to record the length of activity taking place. This can help your veterinary clinic Lafayette, LA when providing treatment. If you own an American Eskimo or other breed of canine then you may want to talk with your vet about canine epilepsy and how it could affect your dog. Not all dogs that have seizures have epilepsy; however, it’s important to have your vet examine the dog to be sure. Epilepsy can cause animals to have sudden, uncontrollable seizures. These seizures are most often recurring and may or may not cause the animal to pass out. If your American Eskimo is suffering from seizures, contact your vet immediately. Some experts believe seizures are an “uncoordinated firing of neurons” within the cerebrum portion of the brain. The reasons for this are unknown; however, it is thought that, like humans, the neurotransmitters are not in a “proper chemical balance” so the activity is not coordinated as it should be. Talk with your vet clinic Southside, IN for additional information.< ... Read more »

If your vet has diagnosed your Australian Shepherd with canine bloat, chances are treatment has already begun to relieve pressure and pain. Bloat is a serious and often fatal condition in canines. Bloat can occur when large amounts of air or fluid forms in the stomach causing the stomach to swell. The swelling often blocks the veins from sending blood to vital organs causing low blood pressure, shock or organ damage. Immediate treatment is needed right away to relieve built up pressure in the dog’s stomach. Your vet may do this by inserting a tube into your Australian Shepherd’s mouth and down to the stomach. If the stomach is twisted, a large hallow needle will be placed in to the stomach to relieve pressure. Surgery may be required as well. If you believe your dog is suffering from bloat, please seek immediate treatment from your veterinarian Willis, TX.
