Ferrets are highly susceptible to eye injuries, eye diseases, and other conditions involving the eye. Due to their curious nature, they often find themselves in predicaments that involve a fight or accidental injury. If your Chocolate ferret’s eye or eyes appear to be swollen, call your vet. A swollen eye could be the result of an injury, debris or trash in the eye, or even an underlying illness. Most ferrets tend to have a variety of eye related problems including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal atrophy, Uveitis, Lymphoma and other injuries related to trauma.

Your veterinarian will most likely want to see your ferret right away. Due to the small nature of a ferret’s eyes, surgery is nearly impossible. In some instances, your veterinarian San Rafael, CA  may simply treat your ferret to keep him comfortable. Although blindness may follow an eye injury, ferret owners have reported their ferrets to live normal lives even without their vision. Visit the given ... Read more »

Cuban Tree Frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) are the largest tree frogs in the warm, humid regions of North America. Being cannibalistic, they prey on smaller frogs for their sustenance. They like living in humid and shaded areas, but can also bury themselves in the soil. Their large toe pads make it easier for them to climb trees; it is also a distinguishing feature that can easily identify them from other species of tree frogs.

Like other species of frogs being kept as pets, Cuban Tree frogs can be housed in an aquarium or terrarium. A layer of moisture-retaining substrate such as moss, soil, or bark should be used. A thick layer of moist soil will allow your frog to burrow if he wants to. The moss provides a moist hiding area. Make sure to regularly mist the enclosure if you have not installed a mister or fogger in the enclosure. A bowl of dechlorinated water will also help preserve humidity inside the en ... Read more »

A dog’s paws play an important role in conducting his normal activities. When the paws are injured, it may affect their use, making it difficult for a dog to go about his regular routine. Running, digging, or leash walks may be marred with pain and won’t be as enjoyable if your dog does not have healthy paws. To keep your pet active and happy, you should learn how to keep his paws free of any form of injury.

Hot or cold surfaces

Even if a dog’s paw pads may seem hard, stepping on an extremely hot or cold surface can injure his paws. Walking on a hot surface for too long may lead to the formation of sores or blisters on a dog’s paw pads. During winter, the extreme cold can cause the paw pads to chap or develop an infection from chemical ice melters.

A large portion of a hedgehog’s body is covered with quills. Quilling occurs when a large number of quills fall off during the shedding period that normally takes place while they are still babies and juveniles. The first quilling occurs when they are about two months of age; during this time they lose their fine baby quills and grow thicker and longer quills.

The second quilling takes place when they are about 4 months old. This second shedding process can be uncomfortable. New quills have to push through the holes of the old quills. Discomfort may occur when larger quills pass through, especially when there are a considerable number of them pushing through the old holes at the same time. Once they become adults, hedgehogs continue to lose quills, however large amount of quills should never be shed off at the same time.

If you seem to be in a point in your dog’s training where you think you are not getting any positive results, why don’t you sit down and evaluate the process in a different point of view. You could be making one of these common mistakes that many pet owners commit when training their pet dogs.

  • You may have unintentionally taught your dog to work only if you have treats in your hand. While treats are used as a form of positive reinforcement during training, you have to stop using the treat once your dog understands what you want him to do.
  • Successful dog training should be conducted gradually, in small steps, to avoid overwhelming your dog.
  • Be consistent in the cues or commands that you give so your dog won’t be confused. Giving too many or mixed signals should be avoided.

Display of aggressive behavior toward people can be an important sign of stress in cats. Since there are many factors or causes that can trigger aggression, identifying the cause is the first step towards solving the problem.

One type of aggressive behavior displayed by cats toward people is play aggression. Many pet owners unknowingly “create” the stimulus by allowing their cats to play with their fingers, thus sending a wrong message that it’s perfectly ok to bite or swipe at the fingers. Also, a kitten that is separated prematurely from the rest of the litter might not have learned proper social behavior when it comes to biting and scratching.

To protect your fingers from injury, use a fishing pole toy when playing with your kitty. This will put a safe distance between your fingers and your cat’s teeth. The toy will encourage the cat to engage in natural ... Read more »

Showing your Peruvian guinea pig can be exciting and fun. It can also be stressful as there are a lot of steps to take to prepare for a show. One of the first things you need to do is bathe your Peruvian guinea pig. If you’re unsure what shampoo to use, talk to your vet about which products work best for your particular cavy. It’s recommended that you bathe your cavy one week before the show if he has short hair and up to two weeks before the show if he has long hair. Some experts recommend a dip for your cavy as well to prevent lice or lice eggs from developing in the coat. Consult your veterinary clinic Atlanta, GA if you are going to dip your cavy. Next, make sure your cavy’s nails are trimmed. De-greasing the grease glands located on the rump of your cavy is also recommended.

If you live in an area prone to snow during the winter months then you may be wondering if your cat will need some type of snow shoe or protection for her paws. In general, most cats do not need snow shoes or foot protection. Cats have a layer of protection on the pads of their paws already. However, there are some cats that could benefit from shoes. For instance, cats with hairy paws may have a tendency to collect ice and snow balls on their feet. Shoes can prevent this; however, shoes should only be used for indoor cats that spend short time outdoors. Long-term outdoor cats should be brought in routinely to have their feet cleaned to prevent ice and snow build up as well as to wash away toxic salt or ice melt used to treat icy surfaces. Contact your vet Atlanta, GA for additional information.
