An outdoor-indoor cat needs to be transitioned to strict confinement when temperatures start to dip and the weather becomes extremely cold. While this can be a challenge for many pet owners, the secret to a smooth transition is environmental enhancement and some training.

A cat that has already been litter box-trained won’t really be a major problem because he will likely fall right back into the habit once he is confined indoors.

For the transition period, you will need at least two litter boxes –one placed inside the house and the other near the door where the cat usually exits. The box at the door is the transitional box; this is the one which is usually used by an outdoor-indoor cat during the first few days of confinement. Fill the boxes with fine-grain clumping litter for easier cleanup and maintenance.
